SPEEED: Planting seeds…growing kids…inspiring vision….

empowering All Full Throttle Towards Their Destiny!”

Roxboro, NC-November 5, 2010.   The Special Populations Enrichment, Education and Employment Department (S.P.E.E.E.D.) is pleased to announce that it has received a $14,148 grant from the ITA Foundation of New York.  The organization will use these funds to facilitate the Initial Teaching Alphabet, i.t.a., for the advancement of literacy and GED attainment in an open lab setting serving youth ages 8-21. Support from the foundation also includes program development, conferences and seminars, consulting and training. SPEEED will kick-off this project during the next Young Entrepreneurs Conference (YEC) on Saturday, November 20, 2010 at 1:30 pm at South Elementary School. This conference will focus on empowering youth who like to do things with their hands; craft, draw, paint, build, invent, design, and technology gurus.

Summary of the SPEEED ITA Project

The Foundation awards grants through a competitive application and review process.  The receipt of this grant indicates the organization is committed to the advancement of literacy to youth.  We hold four Young Entrepreneurs Conferences (YEC) a year (3 one day conferences and 1 three-day conference), to rally youth to our program.  We then choose those who need and want the program to continue with us for the next three months for an intense curriculum in literacy, leadership and entrepreneurial training.  We will offer literacy sessions explaining the ITA program at each conference.  The need to have impeccable literacy skills for these young students is crucial to their success.  Our ITA trained Teachers will conduct these sessions.

S.P.E.E.E.D is a non-profit organization under the umbrella of HEALED, Inc. a registered 501 c 3 organization in North Carolina designed to pick up the pace in mobilizing and motivating youth ages 8-21 who are underserved, disadvantaged, disabled, adjudicated, or displaced to become entrepreneurs through Enrichment, Education,  and Employment opportunities.  Our vision is to equip, cultivate, inspire, and empower youth to become successful leaders and entrepreneurs in all facets of the workforce for the next millennial.

SPEEED Conferences (YEC) are designed to empower a minimum of forty youth by offering hands-on training and educational opportunities in starting, operating, managing and marketing their own company while enhancing literacy skills. The aim is to foster the development of the entrepreneurial spirit, leadership skills and commitment to community development. Then to entice youth to think about their hobbies and interest, and show how these can be manifested into small businesses, that can be started by Young Entrepreneurs the program called YBiz. SPEEED partners with surrounding organizations in Alamance, Caswell, Person and Durham Counties to make sure we serve a diverse population. The project objectives are to also empower, educate and entertain youth through symposiums on life skills such as conflict resolution, job readiness, advocating for their own as well as other youth related issues.

Youth: All interested youth should register by going by the SPEEED office between 9 am and 11 am or calling 336.583.7596. (All conferences are FREE and open to all youth ages 8-21 years of age).
